Running up the score

There’s been a lot of talk about the Patriots running up the score of late. The Patriots scored late TD against Dallas and put Tom Brady back in when Matt Cassel gave up a INT for a TD. Let’s dissect these two games:

Dallas game: The Patriots wanted to give a 4th string RB, Kyle Eckel his “Rudy” moment. It really is that simple.
Miami game: The score had gotten closer and it’s a game of momentum. If he leaves Cassel in there he gives up another INT TD, then momentum is gone and suddenly the outcome of the game in jeopardy. The Patriots are on the road as well. A team came back from a bigger deficit on the same day, so why not seal the game?

Here’s are my questions to those who don’t like “running up the score.” What is wrong with simply playing your best? Isn’t that what we’ve been taught since we were little? Since when are taught to give a half effort? Secondly, do fans really want to see Matt Cassel against Miami? They paid a lot of money for tickets and they are supposed to get only one half of action? Do they want to go home and say they saw a record breaking win or a 35-21 win that was done after 30 minutes?

I don’t remember America complaining when the USA “Dream Team” ran up the score in the Olympics.

  • One of the post-game interviewers today talking to Welker said something snide like “You had to run up the score didn’t you” and I wanted to reach through the screen and slap her.

Put in Papelbon NOW (oh sorry, watching the world series lol)

  • There have been games in recent years where Manning seemed like he was in the game rather late in some Colts blowouts, yet I don’t remember anyone accusing them of running up the score.

  • I think a lot of the people complaining are fans of the teams being beaten, and sports writers/reporters that are pissed at Belichick because he doesn’t give them any information. This is how they vent.

Like PaidTwiceSpouse said, nobody says anything when the Colts, Chargers, or any other team wins by 20+ points.
