World Series Game 1 Diary

Since I was going to be sitting at home watching game 1 of the World Series last night, I thought I’d make myself useful and record my thoughts.
(All times PT)
- 5:24PM – Is there anything better than the big flag that takes up the Monster? You know it’s a big game when they roll that out.
- 5:43PM – Beckett just struck out the side. It looks like he just wants to the fastball for now. With the results he’s getting I can’t blame him. In his last outings, he’s featured more curves. It’s an interesting start.
- 5:47PM – Pedroia HR!!! Wow, he’s enjoying that wall. Score it 1-0 Red Sox.
- 5:48PM – Youk double… Francis can’t be comfortable with Papi and Manny coming up…
- 5:51PM – Ortiz grounds a ball to first after trying to bunt. He just doesn’t seem quite the same.
- 5:52PM – Manny with a screaming hit and it’s 2-0 Good Guys.
- 5:54PM – Fox Trak and comententaters show that Lowell should have walked on four pitches, but the last call a strike. Lowell flies out on the next pitch… Grrrr…
- 5:57PM – ‘tek with a hit. We could have the bases loaded with one out. Damn that’s a tough call. Maybe Drew will continue the October magic.
- 5:59PM – Drew does! Is it possible to erase a year of incompetency with just a few ABs.
- 6:00PM – Lugo is up with an opportunity to drive in two runs. I wish we had Ellsbury up now. Lugo fails and ends the inning.
- 6:10PM – Beckett gets hit a little hard in the top of the 2nd. He’s got some K’s, but in giving up a pair of doubles and a run, it’s now a 3-1 game.
- 6:21PM – Francis was cruising with the first two outs and getting Youk down 0-2. Youk draws a walk. Thought 1 and 2/3 Francis is up to 45 pitches.’
- 6:22PM – Eagle’s Deli promo with their 5lb cheeseburger – that’s not a typo. Am I watching the phantom gourmet?
- 6:23PM – Papi hits a screaming line drive to the wall. The great Rockie OF defense couldn’t come up big there and the result is 4-1 Red Sox lead.
- 6:28PM – Francis gets out of the second with no further damage, but at 57 pitches, he might not go 5 innings today. That could be huge.
- 6:30PM – First sighting of the Liberty Mutual commericials. All sing together now… “And I don’t know if…”
- 6:42PM – Lugo with a perfect bunt base hit. Part of me is interested in seeing Ellsbury try the same thing.
- 6:48PM – It really is raining hard now. I’m surprised we aren’t in a rain delay…
- 6:49PM – Helton hits a huge double off of Beckett. All they hit are doubles.
- 7:07PM – Ramirez just hit a double that he had to hustle for. I’m amazed he got a double out of that. Francis is up to 92 pitches.
- 7:12PM – Varitek has a two-run double, making 6-1 Red Sox.
- 7:14PM – Francis gets the final out, but is up to 103 pitches, possibly ending his day after 4 innings.
- 7:31PM – Lugo with a leadoff base hit! Wow… there aren’t words. Too bad Ellsbury’s bunt was not good enough to move him. You’d think that with the speed on the bases it would be a no-brainer. Ellsbury should just steal second right now. I want a free taco from Taco Bell.
- 7:36PM – Youk drives in Ellsbury with a double after a questionable balk call making it 7-1. The umpire’s point was that Morales stepped more towards home. Ellsbury probably would have scored from first, he’s that fast.
- 7:38PM – Ortiz hits a double towards the triangle driving in Youk. It’s now 8-1. My wife will be disappointed to find that she missed a lot of action with her hair appointment. If only women could plan their hair appointments a little better.
- 7:41PM – Ramirez muscles a bloop over the Tulilliowitski’s head (can anyone spell his name) for an RBI single making it 9-1.
- 7:43PM – The Red Sox tie a World Series record with a 9th extra base hit in a game. However it’s only the 5th inning, no there’s time to kill that record.
- 7:48PM – It’s exactly a grand slam, but J.D. manages an infield hit making 10-1. This half inning is 17 minutes old. Still two outs with the bases loaded.
- 7:53PM – Lugo just walked with the bases loaded. It’s got to be a record to have him on base twice in the same inning. It’s now 11-1 Red Sox.
- 7:56PM – Ellsbury just walked with the bases loaded. It’s now 12-1 Red Sox. We got a conference at the mound and the inning is 28 minutes old according to Fox.
- 7:59PM – That’s the third straight walk with the bases loaded. Pedroia has 5 plate appearances in 5 innings.
- 8:02PM – The announcers do a nice run of the Electric Company’s “1-2-3-4-5, 6-7-8-9-10, 11, 12″ song and credit it Seseme Street. Sad…
- 8:02PM – 34 minutes later the inning is over. The score is 13-1.
- 8:37PM – Not much has happened except that Beckett hasn’t come out the game with a huge lead and multiple long, long waits between innings. I don’t understand it. We could have him well rested for the 4th game.
Not much happens until the end of the game. Gagne came in with a 12 run lead and did his job. Perhaps we’ll bring him in with only a 9 run lead next time. Both teams looked like they just wanted to get this game over with so that they can get to sleep and be ready for game 2.

Watch out, don’t let the MLB bosses see this! Remember the guy that got sued for liveblogging a game last year?
